A Good Weekend for East Coast Skiers (but don't pay full price)

Club X rates the ski conditions for the upcoming weekend for our guests and to give us something to talk about over dinner. The ratings predict the conditions at Sugarbush from one to five stars. You may also see one, two or three trees and a cross country skier if we think the cross country trails will be skiable. We try and predict each weekend early in the week and then refine the rating as the weekend draws closer. Sorry, we are not qualified to rate Mad River Glen.

How accurate are we? Check here

Here is what we mean by the ratings:

Minimal Conditions, Don't Pay Full Price

One Star

We expect limited terrain or poor snow conditions. This might be a good weekend to work on technique or get your ski muscles in shape if you are used to skiing in the east or at Sugarbush and you have a pass or a way of skiing cheaply, but don't go out of your way to be on the mountain. If the conditions are hard or icy this is not a good time to learn to snowboard. If the beginner slope is open this might be a good weekend to learn to ski.

Limited Terrain, Limited Lifts or Poor Weather

Two Stars

Limited terrain, poor snow conditions, or poor weather . If you are familiar with skiing in the east or at Sugarbush and you have a pass or a way of skiing cheaply you can have fun on a weekend like this, as long as you understand what to expect.

A Good Weekend for East Coast Skiers

Three Stars

The Club X gang will be out on the slopes. If its early in the season there may be limited terrain open. The snow conditions might include patches of ice, mainly groomed terrain or mainly man-made snow.

Natural Snow and Good Coverage

Four Stars

Good coverage, limited natural snow or skier packed powder. If snow is in the forecast we might give a five star weekend four stars if we expect strong wind to close lifts.

Excelent Skiing By Any Measure

Five Stars

Fresh snow and very good skiing conditions.

NOTES

Nov 23, 24

Wind shut down the lifts on Saturday. Sunday we had 8+ inches at the top and Exterminator and Bravo were open and the skiing was excellent. A passholders day.

Nov 30, 1

Anyone could have had fun this weekend. Mt. Ellen was open from top to bottom, and there was at least eight inches of fresh snow. At the top of FIS, there was a cornice with waist deap snow below it. This would have been a five star weekend except that south was not open and the slopes were crowded at times.

Dec 7, 8

Excellent skiing on Saturday. It snowed all day on Sunday.
Dec 14, 15 The predicted snow became drizzle on Saturday leaving us with a workable day and that firmed up on Sunday leaving us with a typical New England early season scratchy day.
Dec 21,22 It rained and then it froze. The groomers gave us a workable day by Sunday.
Dec 23-25 Six inches on Christmas day but crowded.
Dec 26-27 Crowded but fun.

Dec 28,29

The groomers were good each morning. The singles line was fast enough and there was plenty of snow if you knew where to look for it.
New Years     A little skiid off and busy.
Jan 4,5 22 inches.
Jan 11,12 It snowed another 11 inches on and off during the week. Very cold. On Sunday we got a few inches of light fluffy cold-weather snow.
Jan 18,19,20 It was -17F on when we woke Saturday morning. You were skiing firm packed powder unless you could find the dry light powder elsewhere. It warmed a bit for Sunday and Monday.
Jan 25,26 It's been very cold. We have natural snow on the trails but it's firm firm firm. Still the whole mountain was open and it snowed on Sunday.
Feb 1,2 No rating given. Good skiing.
Feb 8,9 No rating given.
Feb 15,16 No rating given. -40F (after wind chill) at the base of North on Saturday. Just too damn cold. Sunday it warmed up to around 0 to -10 and the skiing was fun.
Feb 22,23 No rating given. Spring-like on Saturday and heavy rain on Sunday.
Mar 1,2 Hard bumps and ice on the trails and some breakable crust in the trees. It snowed at high elevations on Sunday. Check out the movie.
Mar 8,9 1st classic spring weekends Church skied well. Bumps in trees.
Trails were soft, hero's snow.
Mar 15,16 No rating given. Great spring skiing. Everything open, blue sky, warm classic corn tree and trail runs. April in March.
Mar 22,23 No rating given. Fine spring skiing.
Mar 29,30 No rating given. Some of the best spring skiing all season. Last day of Castlerock. Saturday was good trail spring skiing followed by rain
and lightning all afternoon. The trees where to soft.
Apr 5,6 No rating given. Mad River was knee deep since it was
closed since last Saturday. The bush was only fair since most upper lifts where closed due to wind even though we had lots of snow.
Apr 12,13 No rating given.
Apr 19,20 No rating given. A wonderful spring weekend. As we left on Sunday the temperature was 86F. You could ski from summet to base of North as long as you don't mind rocks, mud, and grass.
